Salt-marshes are highly valuable ecosystems due to their role in supporting the aquatic and bird life. Furthermore, manyanthropogenic activities such as agriculture, salt production or aquaculture targets these areas. They also act asprotective barriers to shores, given their ability to dissipate most of the wave and current energy in high tide. Sea levelrise can place these intertidal zones at risk, reinforcing the need to understand their morphosedimentary and dynamicresponse to the variations on the forcing factors, thus allowing for a better management of these environments. Largeexpansions of salt-marshes and tidal flats are among the morphodynamic contents of the Tagus estuary. This studyfocuses on the recent past evolution of Tagus marsh areas in order to understand their geomorphological response tohigher sea level scenarios. The Aveiro coastal area is highly vulnerable to erosion, becauseit is constituted primarily by low-lying lands of sandy sedimentsthat are frequently subjected to severe wave conditions and largetidal amplitudes (Coelho et al., 2011), as well as due to the closeproximity to the Aveiro lagoon and several urban waterfronts. Inthis region the problems associated with coastal erosion are oftenreported and discussed (Coelho, 2005; EUrosion, 2006;Pais-Barbosa et al., 2006; Coelho et al., 2007), constituting aconcern for the local populations and stakeholders. Furthermore,the retreat of the shoreline may imply the breaching of a newentrance to the Aveiro lagoon, which would cause major social,economic and environmental impacts. This breaching has onlybeen avoided by emergency works which have been carried outfrequently over the past few years. The beach profile morphodynamic processes can be relatively well reproduced in large scale physical models. However,the cost associated to their use makes this methodology not always practicable. As alternative, it is desirable to exploreand apply smaller scales laboratory infrastructures with confidence, despite the different scaling laws, that is, theimpossibility to simulate all relevant variables in correct relationship to each other. The combination of physical andnumerical modelling can be a methodology to improve the required confidence (HYDRALAB III European Programme). Scale effects in a numerical process-based beach profile model, applied to simulate beach profileevolution under erosive wave conditions, were investigated in the present study. The numerical model was applied at laboratory and prototype scales, first with the default settings and then calibrated. Its performance was evaluated using the Brier Skill Score. The numerical results of the profile evolution in both scales were compared after reducing the results from the prototype scale to the laboratory scale. The profile erosion prediction was overestimated in the laboratory scale and underestimated in the prototype scale. Despite the calibration parameter that causes the largestmodifications of the beach profile being the same in both scales, the Gamma2 wave parameter, the most efficientparameter was different. For most of the calibration parameters, the value for the best case was not coincident in bothscales. It was concluded that there are scale effects using the Litprof model.

This work uses a simple method based on the defect law that is able to reproduce the horizontal velocities within the wave bottom boundary layer, using a limited number of parameters. The theory is checked against the measured velocity profiles gathered with a high resolution Acoustic Doppler Velocity Profiler. The velocities were collected during an experimental project performed at the Large Oscillating Water Tunnel of Deltares under flat-bed/sheet flow conditions, allowing the analysis of the effects of wave nonlinearities and of a net current on the sediment transport processes. The velocity estimates are used to infer the time-varying bed shear stress, using the momentum-integral method. Secondly, the bed shear stresses are incorporated in a quasi-steady bed load formulation and the transport rate predictions are compared with the net transport rate measurements obtained in the same facility. The results show that the methodology presented in this work provides a suitable estimation of the horizontal near-bed sediment transport rates under non-linear oscillatory flows.

Wave-current interactions play a major role in the dynamics of shallow tidal inlets. Thisstudy investigates these interactions at a natural inlet, with a strong focus on current-inducedchanges on wave propagation. The analysis of hydrodynamic data collected at the Albufeiralagoon, Portugal, revealed spatiotemporal variations of water levels and wave heights alongthe inlet, attributed to wave-current interaction processes. We compared the simulations of acoupled wave-circulation modeling system, computed with and without waves, andpropagated with and without current feedback. The morphology of estuaries and rivers changes constantly due to the dynamic imbalance between theforcing actions (e.g. river flow, tides, surface waves and wind) and the sedimentary reactions. Este estudo visa melhorar a avaliação e previsão da vulnerabilidade/resiliência de sistemas dunares à acção das ondas em condições de tempestade marítima. O objectivo foi avaliar o desempenho dos modelos XBeach e Litprof na erosão de dunas. Testaram-se os modelos para um caso de verificação de erosão de duna realizado em canal de grande escala de laboratório. A avaliação do desempenho dos modelos baseou-se na análise da evolução morfológica, em indicadores de impacto (volume de erosão, recuo da duna e recuo do topo da duna) e num indicador de erro (Brier Skill Score). Apresentam-se e testam-se os parâmetros por defeito (standard set of parameter settings) para ambos os modelos. Da avaliação de desempenho dos dois modelos com os parâmetros por defeito concluiu-se que o desempenho do modelo XBeach é bom e do modelo Litprof é fraco. Recomenda-se que numa aplicação de engenharia para previsão da erosão de dunas, em que importa não só a precisão como também estar do lado da segurança, o modelo XBeach com os parâmetros por defeito deve ser usado com precaução, uma vez que o volume de erosão foi subestimado. Apresentam-se, discutem-se e testam-se os parâmetros de calibração para ambos os modelos. Concluiu-se que os parâmetros mais influentes na evolução morfológica foram: beta, break, facua, gammax, hswitch, lws e wetslp para o modelo XBeach, e Maximum Angle of Bed Slope para o modelo Litprof. Os parâmetros lws e wetslp do modelo XBeach foram aqueles que conferiram ao perfil final uma geometria mais próxima da configuração observada. Os resultados obtidos para o indicador de erro BSS evidenciam que o melhor desempenho foi obtido com alteração do parâmetro lws e que o segundo melhor desempenho foi obtido com a alteração do parâmetro wetslp, sendo a ambos atribuída a classificação de excelente. Uma vez que a modificação do parâmetro lws permitiu melhorar a previsão de duas características fundamentais sob o ponto de vista da engenharia que são o recuo do topo da duna e o limite da extensão da zona activa (onde se observou a formação da barra submersa durante a experiência), considera-se que ele é de grande relevância na simulação da evolução da erosão de dunas com o modelo XBeach. No seu melhor desempenho, o modelo Litprof calibrado reproduziu correctamente o recuo do topo da duna, simulou a formação de uma barra submersa na posição observada experimentalmente, simulou incorrectamente o volume de erosão (cerca de metade do observado) e o declive da duna, e consequentemente gerou um avanço da duna ao nível da água em vez de recuo. Por este motivo, recomenda-se precaução na aplicação do modelo Litprof para previsão da erosão de dunas. Da comparação dos modelos morfodinâmicos XBeach e Litprof nas duas fases, i.e., na fase de teste com os parâmetros por defeito e na fase de calibração, concluiu-se que foi o modelo Xbeach que apresentou o melhor desempenho neste caso de estudo. A execução deste estudo permitiu testar e ficar a conhecer a elevada capacidade do modelo XBeach e a razoável capacidade do modelo Litprof na previsão da erosão de dunas.

Flooding is a significant environmental threat that can cause loss of human life, damage to infrastructure,disruption to economic activity, and decline in ecological resources in coastal areas. This paper presentsa framework for assessing the potential implications of floods in fetch-limited coastal environments(with no significant wave setup), focused on hazard mapping and risk analysis. Hazard maps are basedon defined return periods and risk estimates are determined by computing the extent of affectedoccupied and ecological areas lying below water levels associated with the return periods. Formanagement purposes, this study chooses the adaptive management approach as the most feasible toimprove local economies and mitigate the loss of natural areas, and identifies/recommends specific typesof occupation and activity for each flood hazard zone.The proposed framework was applied to a low-energy fetch-limited beach, Ancão Peninsula backbarrier,located in the Ria Formosa barrier system (southern Portugal). Inundation levels predicted for 1-,10-, and 100-year return periods were 2.02 m, 2.39 m, and 2.84 m above MSL (mean sea level),respectively. On this basis, flood impacts were found to be important in occupied areas, generatingphysical damage to residences and infrastructure. A baía da cidade da Praia, na ilha de Santiago, Cabo Verde, acolhe um dos principais portos comerciais e de cruzeiros de Cabo Verde, tendo também uma relação importante, do ponto de vista ambiental e paisagístico, com a frente ribeirinha da cidade. Procedeu-se a uma análise da evolução morfológica do sistema, com recurso a levantamentos hidrográficos (de 1882 a 2016) e imagens aéreas (de 1968 a 2018), para determinar tendências evolutivas históricas. Realizou-se também a aplicação de um sistema de modelos numéricos, envolvendo a simulação da hidrodinâmica, do transporte sedimentar e da evolução do fundo, para identificar os processos litorais dominantes. Calculou-se uma tendência média de avanço da praia Grande ou da Gamboa de 0,6 a 1,0 m/ano, correspondendo este último valor à média dos últimos 50 anos. As condições de maior hidrodinamismo no interior da baía estão associadas aos períodos de agitação marítima de maior altura. As intervenções mais recentes, nomeadamente na zona portuária, tendem a diminuir esse hidrodinamismo.

This study investigates the roleof infragravity waves (IGW) on the hydrodynamics of a wave-dominated inlet (Albufeira lagoon, Portugal) during storm Leslie (October 2018) through the analysis of field observations. Measured significant IGW heights reached up to 0.9 m in the surf zone, at adjacent ocean beaches, and 0.4 m at the flood-delta. At the flood-delta, IGW were more energetic than wind-generated short-waves by up to a factor of 2. These large IGW are expected to contribute significantly to sediment transport during storm conditions.

Existing knowledge on the evolution of the Tagus estuary inlet morphology derives mostlyfrom analyses of bathymetric surveys and aerial images. The limitations of this approachprevent a detailed understanding of the processes responsible for this evolution, as well as theprediction of the future evolution. A 2DH morhodynamic model was therefore applied to shednew light into the sediment dynamics of this tidal inlet. Description of the method

Due to their exposure to various forcings such as tides and waves, estuary mouths constitute dynamic coastal environments where sediment transport can result in abrupt and significant morphological changes. They concentrate relevant socio-economic and ecological values, which will become even more challenging in the climate change context. Despite their importance worldwide, the dynamics of these environments remains partly understood only and fosters many studies from the scientific community. This work is part of a citizen-science project (named Nouveaux Commanditaires Sciences) which aims at studying the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of the Tagus estuary mouth (bordered by a metropolitan area of 2 million inhabitants), especially during storms, by combining in-situ field observations, remote sensing data and numerical modelling. This research program has been set up following the request for a better understanding of the coastal erosion and marine flooding during storms expressed by severely affected inhabitants from an informal neighbourhood, Segundo Torrão (Southern margin of the inlet). In addition, local populations provide support for instrumental deployments and data acquisitions. In return, new knowledge derived from scientific studies will be used to improve coastal management over these threatened areas. In this presentation, we will present the main actions that are being carried out in the scope of this project.

To increase the response capability to coastal flooding events in an accelerating sea level rise context, the ability to predict floods has to improve and be integrated with other components of risk, such as vulnerability and exposure. Os observatórios costeiros podem apoiar a gestão diária e a longo prazo dos sistemascosteiros, permitindo antecipar eventos de contaminação, contribuir para a vigilânciacontínua destas zonas e implementar e adaptar planos de gestão. Ao integrarem previsões,análises de cenários e indicadores, para além de observações históricas e em tempo real, estasferramentas têm aumentado de complexidade ao longo dos anos.

Coastal forecast systems have become reliable tools to support daily coastal management and strategic long-term planning. However, the availability of these systems for most coastal areas remains scarce, in particular for small estuaries and coastal bays, which limits the efficiency of management for these areas from both economic and environmental perspectives. Building a new forecast system or maintaining in operation an existing one requires considerable effort, from both financial and personnel points of view. Accurate forecasts require a team comprising experts in coastal processes and computer science and the availability of robust and large computational resources to maintain the predictions available on a daily basis. Herein, a new concept in forecast tools is presented, building the foundations for forecast systems to be built and made available for all coastal systems worldwide. Denoted OPENCoastS, this freely available web service builds forecasts systems for the coastal area selected by the user and maintains them in operation using the European Open Science Cloud infrastructure. The influence of freshwater discharge and sea level rise in the salinity in the upper Tagusestuary is assessed using a numerical model. Results suggest that the river flow is the main driver of the salinity in the upper estuary and that salinity intrusion increases with the duration of the droughts. For the analyzed scenarios, salinity reaches concentrations that are inadequate for irrigation during some periods, which can harm the agricultural activities.

The hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics of a low energy estuarine beach was analysed. The beach is subjected to local wind waves generated in an area of restricted fetch, wake waves generated by catamarans and a semi diurnal meso-tidal regime. Only storm events of short duration modify the beach profile, which, once the normal hydrodynamic conditions are restored, naturally recovers its initial shape. The beach is characterised by having a steep upper slope until mean sea level, followed, seaward, by a low gradient terrace, and a bimodal sediment distribution. To investigate the hydro sedimentologic beach behaviour, wind, topo-hydrographic and sedimentologic data were used as input and validation of process based numerical modelling. Wave generation and transformation in an area of restricted fetch, nearshore circulation, sediment transport and morphological evolution were simulated for average annual conditions and storm conditions. The statistical analysis of a six-year wind data series allowed to derive the average wind regime, based on which, the average annual wave regime and the average annual longshore sediment budget, 14.5x103 m3year-1, were calculated. The contribution of the individual components of the representative wave regime, discretised by directional sector and height class of incidence, was evaluated as well as the spatial distribution of the longshore sediment transport in the active part of the beach profile. The characteristics of the wave groups generated by the passage of catamarans at different speeds were estimated and their action on the beach morphology was simulated. Although when the catamarans travel at 20 knots speed the average annual wake wave energy dissipated at the beach is 2.5 times higher than the average annual wind wave energy, the erosion effect on the beach profile is still not relevant for the present traffic. In opposition, short duration storm events generate the formation of an erosion scarp at the upper part of the beach face. The numerical modelling of this phenomenon allowed to acknowledge on the protective effect that the low gradient terrace has on the beach face.

O objectivo do presente trabalho foi o estabelecimento de um modelo matemático do fenómeno da refracção das ondas de gravidade, apoiado num pro¬grama cálculo automático bastante aperfeiçoado e enquadrado por uma técnica de utilização prática que permitisse a resolução rápida dos problemasinerentes ao cálculo de um conjunto de diagramas de refracção, independentemente do número de ondas monocromáticas a analisar.Numa primeira parte, apresentam-se algumas considerações sumárias so¬bre o método de estabelecimento do programa de cálculo e sobre a necessidade de se dispor de um modelo matemático de refracção. A segunda parte é dedicada ao estudo do fenómeno da refracção das on¬das de gravidade e seu tratamento numérico. No Cap.3 indicam-se, de forma Muito sintética, os fundamentos da teoria das ondas de pequena amplitude sendo deduzidas as principais expressões utilizadas no estudo da refracção. É apresentada a teoria da refracção de uma onda sinusoidal, sendo abordado um vasto leque de problemas tais como os aspectos energético e geométrico da refracção, as soluções analíticas para fundos algébricos, as zonas de convergência e cáusticas, a refracção por efeito de correntes, e as aproximações da teoria da refracção. Por último criticam-se os métodos gráficos habituais de cálculo de planos de ondulação. No Cap. 4 são deduzidas as equações de base do tratamento numérico da refracção das ondas sinusoidais como um problema de valores iniciais. No Cap. 5 são apresentadas as dife¬rentes técnicas de cálculo e de interpolação das principais grandezas di¬rectamente ligadas a obtenção de uma ortogonal e dos sucessivos valores da amplitude relativa da onda. São indicados os métodos numéricos de integração das equações diferenciais do raio de onda e do coeficiente de afasta¬mento de ortogonais. E feita referencia a técnicas de alisamento da batimetria. Em todos os casos são apresentados os métodos utilizados no LNEC as¬sim como outros referidos na bibliografia. No Cap. 6 são indicadas, para os vários programas preparados no LNEC, as técnicas de cálculo e de inter¬polação e os métodos numéricos de integração usados. São apresentadas, de uma forma exaustiva, todas as verificações dos programas levadas a cabo após o seu estabelecimento, designadamente a verificação analítica e a comparação dos resultados obtidos com os métodos numéricos e gráficos para fundos ir¬regulares. No âmbito da verificação dos programas é ainda feita referência a resultados obtidos por outros autores e a ensaios em modelo reduzido. Por último tiram-se conclusões sobre a escolha dos programas a lançar em exploração.A terceira e última parte é consagrada à análise do actual programa de cálculo de diagramas de refracção. Assim, no Cap. 7 indicam-se, em li¬nhas muito gerais, o tipo de dados a fornecer, as hipóteses de exploração do programa e o seu modo de funcionamento; é ainda feita uma análise da estrutura do programa, relativamente pormenorizada. 0 Cap. 8 é consagrado à discrição da forma de utilização prática do programa, sendo discutidas as perspectivas de custo da sua utilização cobrindo todas as hipóteses de exploração do programa, ilustrados com os dados e resultados respectivos. No Cap. 9 apresentam-se as conclusões do trabalho e indicam-se as linhas de orientação a seguir no que respeita ao aperfeiçoamento do modelo matemático da refracção e ao estabelecimento de outros modelos matemáticos dependentes ou não daquele.0 texto principal de dissertação encerra-se com 96 referencias bibliográficas, correspondentes aos principais trabalhos consultados pelo autor, na realização do presente estudo; esta bibliografia refere-se a Abril de 1975. São indicados, em linhas gerais, as formas possíveis de exploração daqueles programas, o seu modo de funcionamento e os dados a fornecer. É feita uma análise de pormenor da es¬trutura dos programas, sendo descrita a sua forma de utilização prática, e apresentados vários exemplos de aplicação ilustrados com os dados e resul¬tados respectivos. São indicadas algumas verificações efectuadas a estes programas.

0 caminhamento das areias ao longo das costas marítimas é regulado por leis ainda incompletamente apreendidas, mas cujo conhecimento cada vez mais perfeito se torna indispensável no projecto e ensaio em modelo reduzido de grande parte das obras destinadas a solucionar problemas de hidráulica marítima.Começa-se neste trabalho por caracterizar, sob os pontos de vista hidrodinâmico e de movimentação aluvionar, a orla costeira, zona em que o transporte litoral se processa, abordando-se a seguir o aspecto prático mais importante do fenómeno, ou seja, a previsão dos caudais sólidos a partir das características das ondas e do material móvel que forma a praia.Com este último objectivo analisa-se o conjunto dos dados experimentais disponíveis, segundo uma perspectiva baseada na análise dimensional do fenómeno, para a seguir se proceder a um estudo experimental focado sobre a influência do peso específico e do diâmetro do material móvel.Apresentam-se ainda, em anexo, os conceitos básicos respeitantes às correntes longitudinais, fenómeno que teve também de ser objecto de um estudo aprofundado, por estar intimamente relacionado com o transporte sólido litoral.

Este trabalho constitui um estudo em extensão sobre as característi¬cas mais importantes dos perfis transversais das praias e sobre a evolução resultante da actuação da ondulação. Pretendeu-se assim obter um conhecimento geral sobre este assunto, de modo a permitir, por um lado, o melhor planeamento dos trabalhos marítimos e, por outro, uma melhor interpretação dos modelos reduzidos de fundo móvel.Utiliza-se neste trabalho uma nomenclatura original em língua portuguesa, na tentativa de estabelecer uma equivalência com os termos consagrados na literatura siglo-saxónica.Dentro do esquema geral acima enunciado, são estudadas com maior atenção: o mecanismo da movimentação dos materiais nos fundos; a evolução so¬frida pelos perfis em resultado da actuação das ondas e destas em conjugação com as marés; as características da faixa de rebentação das praias; e as variações da granulometria do material móvel.Quanto à movimentação dos materiais em fundos de maior profundidade, apresenta-se uma interpretação sobre as profundidades a que se inicia o transporte dos sedimentos e o sentido desse transporte.Em relação à evolução dos perfis descrevem-se as suas fases mais significativas, quer para o caso de ondas de período e altura crescentes como decrescentes. Introduzem-se os conceitos de perfis de máxima erosão e máximo enchimento.

O presente trabalho baseia-se num estudo experimental sobre o funcionamento hidráulico de esporões marítimos no caso em que estes limitam troços de praia que se comportam, na sua evolução, como unidades fisiográficamente independentes. Pretende-se, com este estudo, contribuir para o conhecimento do mecanismo de evolução de praias em que são construídos campos de esporões, com vista ao projecto de dispositivos funcionais deste tipo de defesa costeira. Acessoriamente, tirando partido dos esporões como meio de medição do caudal sólido litoral, fa¬zem-se algumas considerações sobre as relações existentes entre o transporte litoral e as características da onda actuante.O relatório é constituído pelas seguintes partes : a Introdução, em que se define o objectivo do estudo e as suas características; o capítulo I, em que se apresentam noções gerais sobre esporões; o Capi¬tulo II, em que se dá conhecimento do estudo experimental realizado, definindo o seu planeamento, a tecnologia experimental, as características dos ensaios realizados, a interpretarão dos resultados obtidos e as conclusões; o Capitulo III, que diz respeito a casos reais de emprego de esporões, em que, após umas generalidades, se apresentam as principais características das obras de defesa da Cova do Vapor - Costa da Caparica, do campo de esporões da praia de Espinho e do esporão da praia do Estoril, finalizando com algumas conclusões; o Capítulo IV em que se apresentam considerações sumárias sobre caudal sólido litoral, as quais compreendem algumas generalidades, considerações teóricas, resultados experimen¬tais, observações na natureza e conclusões; finalmente, as Conclusões Finais, onde se agrupam todas as considerações do estudo que se julgam de primordial interesse.

The present report summarizes the field campaigns of the project MOSAIC.pt, performed between January and March 2019 in the Cova-Gala, Vieira and São Pedro de Moel beaches, located in the Portuguese west coast. The campaigns aimed to characterize the response of the beaches, with diverse typology, to the hydrodynamic forcing and included topographic surveys by GNSS-RTK, drone surveys, superficial sediment sampling and the report of the territorial elements affected.

The present report summarizes the 6th field campaign of the project UBEST, performed in the Tagus estuary on November 6, 2018. This campaign was the third in the Tagus estuary and was representative of autumn conditions. Seven stations were chosen along the estuary. In situ measurements of temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were carried out and water samples were collected to determine in laboratory the concentration of nutrients, chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, and confirm dissolved oxygen and pH on samples where pH sensors were not available. The data acquired will contribute to a better understanding of the biogeochemical functioning of the Tagus estuary and to calibrate and validate numerical models (hydrodynamic and biogeochemical), that will attempt to predict the response of the estuary to future scenarios of climate change and anthropogenic inputs.

This campaign was the first in the Tagus estuary and was representative of spring conditions. Seven stations were chosen along the estuary where in situ measurements of temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen (% and mg/L) were carried out and water samples were collected to determine in laboratory the concentration of nutrients, chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, and confirm dissolved oxygen and pH on samples where pH sensors were not available. The data acquired will contribute to better understanding the biogeochemical functioning of the Tagus estuary and to calibrate and validate numerical models (hydrodynamic and biogeochemical), that will attempt to predict the response of the estuary to future scenarios of climate change and anthropogenic inputs.

This report describes the design and installation of the Parque das Nações online monitoring station and the procedures relative to its maintenance and data verification undertaken between January 2016 and February 2017. This station is equipped with a SEBA MPS D3 multiparameter probe, which measures water levels, conductivity and water temperature, and a SEBA Slimcom2 data logger, for data acquisition and transmission. The data acquired during the period to which this report refers are also briefly presented. This monitoring station is under operation in the scope of the projects H2020 BINGO and FCT UBEST.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo caracterizar o regime de agitação marítima na zona costeira entre as embocaduras dos rios Mondego e Lis no período 1952-2010. Enquadra-se no âmbito de um estudo mais alargado, cujo objetivo é o estudo da dinâmica sedimentar costeira e a previsão da evolução futura da linha de costa do mesmo trecho.A série cronológica compreende 59 anos de dados, de 1952 a 2010, resultando num total de 86200 trios de valores para os parâmetros Hs, Tp e Dir, indissociáveis na caracterização do regime de agitação marítima. Numa primeira fase, estimam-se as frequências de ocorrência relativas destes parâmetros por classes de intervalos semiabertos no limite superior e com amplitudes 0.50 m, 2 s e 10º, respetivamente, sendo consideradas para as direções escalões de 5º quando se justifica maior pormenor. São analisados os parâmetros estatísticos média, desvio-padrão, mínimo e máximo, e 1º, 2º e 3º quartis das séries temporais destes três parâmetros, correspondentes aos regimes geral e sazonais. A sazonalidade considerada tem por base o inverno marítimo, de outubro a março, e o verão marítimo, de abril a setembro, e a mensalidade, na qual a análise incide sobre cada mês individualmente e na inter mensalidade.Concluiu-se que a zona de estudo está sujeita a um regime geral de agitação marítima de elevada energia caracterizado por uma forte sazonalidade. Com características médias Hs 2.15 m, Dir 299.5ºN e Tp 11.6 s, e Hs mais frequente de 1.00 1.50 m associada a Dir 300 310ºN e Tp 8-10 s, o regime geral regista eventos máximos com Hs de 13.13 m. Eventos de Hs>5.00 m representaram 3.69% das ocorrências, sendo que Hs>9.50 m ocorreram exclusivamente para Dir 270 290ºN e Tp 16-22 s, e os valores médio e máximo de Hs no inverno/verão marítimo foram 2.66/1.63 m e 13.13/8.32 m, respetivamente. Da análise mensal verificou-se que as médias de Hs e Tp são máximas em janeiro, 3.02 m e 14 s, respetivamente, e mínimas em julho, 1.39 m e 9 s, restringindo se as médias mensais de Dir a 289 311ºN, com as obliquidades extremas, oeste/noroeste (289/311ºN), em janeiro/agosto. Da comparação com outros estudos concluiu-se que a sazonalidade e anos atípicos influenciam as análises baseadas em períodos restritos e que uma análise baseada numa série temporal de dados de agitação marítima muito longa robustece a representatividade dos parâmetros expostos neste estudo.

A necessidade de proteger as povoações costeiras e mitigar o efeito erosivo observado na costa oeste portuguesa, resultante da carência sedimentar, levou a que a extensão de 30 km de linha de costa (LC) a sul da Figueira da Foz tenha sido fortemente intervencionada através da construção de esporões e defesas longitudinais aderentes. Este estudo caracteriza o transporte sedimentar potencial induzido pela agitação marítima combinada com a variação do nível do mar devida às marés astronómica e meteorológica a sul da embocadura do rio Mondego, no período de 1952 a 2010. Com base na análise estatística da série temporal de parâmetros de onda (hindcast) relativos ao referido período, identificou-se um regime com grande variabilidade interanual e sazonal e bastante energético, com 40% de ocorrência de Hs superior a 2 m e direção média 299.5ºN. Do cálculo do transporte longitudinal potencial (LITDRIFT) destacam-se valores anuais bastante variáveis, entre 580 1500 x103 m3.ano-1, com deriva para sul de média 385 x103 m3.ano-1 em 78% dos anos, identificando-se também a distribuição transversal do transporte longitudinal na zona ativa, com extensão variável (~2000 m). Entre 2008 e 2010 foi prolongado o molhe norte da embocadura do rio Mondego em cerca de 400 m, motivando o principal objetivo do presente estudo: avaliar o impacte desse prolongamento nas praias a sul, recorrendo a modelação numérica (LITLINE). O modelo de evolução de LC foi calibrado (1996-2001) e verificado (2001-2008) com base em LC observadas e dados de agitação marítima sinóticos. A previsão da evolução nos 12 anos subsequentes ao prolongamento evidencia um recuo generalizado da LC, acentuado a sotamar dos esporões existentes.
