Research and Professional Activity

Has participated in dozens research or engineering and consultancy projects at both national and international levels:
  • Physical and numerical modelling (SWASH model) of wave propagation over vegetation
  • Numerical modelling of wave propagation:
    • Application of SWAN, MIKE 21 SW, COULWAVE and DREAMS models

  • Application and construction of 1D and 2D flood numerical models (HEC-RAS and ISIS-TUFLOW)
  • Application of wave overtopping model AMAZON and calculation of wave overtopping in maritime structures using neural network models NN_Overtopping2 and Overtopping Predictor v1.1
  • Development and application of methodologies for the wave overtopping and flood risk assessment and for an alert system
  • Physical modelling (flume) of regular, irregular and bichromatic wave propagation. Performing experiments using resistive probes, acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) and wave generation and data acquisition systems
  • Assistance in field campaigns:
    • Topo-bathymetric survey using Differencial Global Positioning System (DGPS)
    • Measurement of wave and currents data using instruments pressure transducers, electromagnetic current meters and an ADV.
  • Spectral and time-domain analysis of free-surface elevation series and analysis of velocity time series
  • Processing and analysis of wave and currents data (field, numerical and laboratory)

Scientific Orientation

Supported and supervised colleagues and interns on several activities: (i) physical and numerical modelling of wave propagation over vegetation; (ii) development of computational programming methodologies for the calculation of wave overtopping; (iii) processing field data for the construction of a drainage catchment model; (iv) managing and performing laboratory wave-flume experiments and analysis of the measured data.
