The activity of the Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit (NPTS – Núcleo de Planeamento, Tráfego e Segurança), covers three major areas:

	operation of the road traffic system, particularly as regards road safety and characterization of mobility;
	planning of terrestrial transportation systems, including the evaluation of their environmental and economic impacts;
	information systems and support to the automation of the design of road and railway infrastructures.

Other scientific and technical activities are also conducted by NPTS, particularly the organization and participation in scientific and technical meetings, participation in work groups, support to the building industry by performing tests and by providing expert advisory services and activities related with standardization, training, etc. As refers to ordinary intervention, the NPTS has also participated in: the preparation and organization of scientific and technical meetings, in the preparation of technical training actions, in the support to the building industry, the latter being achieved by performing tests and by providing expert advisory services, and in activities related with standardization.

NPTS has also represented the country in international technical forums within its activity areas (AIPCR, CEN, COST, AET and CE).
