Improving risk management for geohazards based on Citizens
Within the realm of natural hazards, geohazards are recognised as being particularly complex and often having the potential of triggering disasters. This complexity has led to increased political commitment and interest in engaging multi-stakeholder and citizens in disaster risk management. The AGEO project explored new forms to foster collaboration between civil society and authorities, using the rapidly developing field of citizen science and its innovative tool of citizens

Applications of low-cost and smart mobile devices for railway infrastructure performance assessment and characterization
Railway infrastructures degrade due to numerous factors, leading to malfunctions, track irregularities and other faults that negatively impact the running behavior of trains and the normal railway operation. Railway infrastructure managers traditionally conduct visual inspections and use dedicated inspection vehicles for track monitoring, which are expensive and disruptive to railway traffic. To address this issue and following the recent advances in the capabilities of mobile devices, new approaches for railway track monitoring using low-cost systems have been proposed to assess and characterize the railway infrastructure. Low-cost solutions, such as smart mobile devices with embedded IMUs, can revolutionize railway monitoring and maintenance by reducing costs and improving efficiency. A short literature review on various low-cost and smart mobile applications for railway transport performance assessment and characterization is presented, mainly focusing of the use of low-cost and/or mobile IMUs as condition monitoring systems. A case study is also presented on measurements from a smartphone to evaluate accelerations inside a passenger train on an 11 km stretch. Among other aspects, the results evidence the strong correlation between the vertical accelerations and the longitudinal level of the track, particularly in terms of the standard deviation. These approaches have the potential to complement or replace dedicated inspection vehicles and provide early detection of track faults, leading to cost savings and improved safety and ride comfort for passengers. Such approaches can be integrated in monitoring systems to optimize railway operation and maintenance procedures with the use of big data, IoT applications, and AI techniques.

Asset management of urban drainage systems
Asset management (AM) has become increasingly important in various sectors and organizations over the lastfew decades. This introductory chapter provides an overview of asset management to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of AM, summarizing its application to urban drainage asset management (UDAM), an asset-intensive sector. The chapter includes a short history, from general AM to UDAM, and refers to milestones, key organizations, and standards. It describes AM principles and different perspectives to approach the subject. The UDAM context is outlined, providing the general processes which can influence strategic, tactical, or operational decision levels, accounting for the specific perspectives and objectives on the subject. The main approaches applied to UDAM are broadly described, some of which incorporate a balance of costs, risks, opportunities, and performance, while others focus on specific aspects. The chapter presents different types of approaches to AM, ranging from those based on condition, reliability, and risk to those based on value, followed by those based on performance or quality of service, highlighting common aspects or overlaps between them. When appropriate, guidance to the chapters where additional information on the subject can be found is provided. Finally, challenges, limitations and opportunities are highlighted.

Co-design with Super-diversity
The challenge of creating places that promote place attachment, a sense of belonging and community identity peaks in places of super-diversity. Super-diversity commonly generates a fragmented society due to variegated cultural backgrounds, language and weak social bonds and civic activities. An increasingly wide and plural scenario is a challenge for place attachment. In such super-diverse places, largely due to immigration, new socio-spatial patterns and identities arise, posing a particular challenge for public space design. Placemaking, as a bottom-up and people-centred process of improving the liveability of cities through collaboration and community participation, could counter these challenges. It ideally creates a virtuous cycle in which the community transforms and reshapes spaces. Community engagement and a holistic focus on a sense of place are key components of placemaking, which in turn bears a great potential for empowerment. Moreover, placemaking approaches can potentially contribute to co-creation of physical and social spaces that bring locals and immigrants to interact with each other and to connect to the environment. This co-creation and engagement in a super-diverse context can be fostered through digital and mobile technologies, such as social media. This chapter discusses some of the challenges and opportunities posed to placemaking and place design in super-diverse urban contexts. The question that arises is: How can placemaking benefit from super-diversity to create place attachment and mutual benefits for the communities? As an inspiring discussion, the chapter considers some of the challenges posed by the current redesigning process of Martim Moniz Square in Lisbon
