Experimental study on crack filling by upstream fills in dams
The paper presents the main results of a research study into the crack-filling ability of granularmaterials located upstream of an erosion path in the core of a zoned dam. Upstream crack fillers areusually considered in dams located in zones of high seismic activity, as a redundant element, should acrack develop in the core and the downstream filter fail to retain the eroded particles. Uniform soilsof fine-sand size are highly effective at filling cracks and stopping the progression of erosion; however, they can be significantly expensive. In the interest of reducing the costs of their overuse, anexperimental investigation is conducted of the extent to which gap-graded sandy gravels that arenaturally present during the construction of dams can safely provide the crack-filling action. It wasconcluded that the sand content of the upstream material that is susceptible to suffusion, and itsrelation with D15F of the filter, is critical for rapid crack filling to occur. Other parameters influencingcrack-filling ability are the gravel content, the fines content and the type of the fines in the upstreamsoil. Practical rules to estimate the likelihood of crack filling by an upstream granular material beingeffective at stopping the progression of internal erosion along a concentrated leak in zoned dams arealso proposed.

Feasibility of creosote treatment for glued-laminated pine-timber railway sleepers
This article studies the possibility of using market available glued-laminated timber (GLT) based on MUF adhesives as an alternative to traditional solid timber sleepers was studied. The study comprised an examination of the effect of creosote treatment on the short-term and durability after accelerated aging of the glue lines (delamination and shear strength) and the potential for full sapwood penetration by the creosote. Creosote treatment showed a negative effect on shear strength and delamination, more severe in the non-structural than the structural GLT specimens tested. Full penetration of creosote into the sapwood was not achieved. GLT elements based on MUF adhesives can be considered an alternative to solid wood sleepers if specific grading of lamellas, proper treatment schedule and highly controlled factory production are implemented.

Flooding hazard in the Tagus estuarine area: The challenge of scale in vulnerability assessments
This paper describes the methodology of the vulnerability assessment to flooding in anestuarine context and presents the final results for the Tagus River estuary, in the metropoli-tan region of Lisbon (Portugal). Performing a local study adapted to a specific type of hazardposed two initial methodological challenges: the selection of the unit of analysis and theidentification of the pertinent and available variables. Both challenges were addressedassuming that the area to be assessed should also include the units outside the inundatedarea, a buffer zone that would include areas indirectly affected. The application of thestatistical procedures established in the SoVI1 methodology indicate that certain widely usedvariables in vulnerability assessments on smaller scales are inadequate at the statistical blockscale and that specific variables must be defined and integrated to represent more broadly thedimensions of vulnerability related to social assistance, infrastructures and commutability. The extracted principal components identified the vulnerability drivers in the riversideand surrounding areas. These drivers identify the urban context, the family structure, andthe socio-economic condition expressed in terms of housing characteristics, education, mobility and commuting as the dimensions that most differentiate territorial and individuals

Force-based higher-order beam element with flexural-shear-torsional interaction in 3D frames. Part II: Applications
The specific features of the proposed force-based formulation derived in the companion paper, which is applied for the first time to higher-order beam theories, are herein thoroughly validated. Introductory numerical examples illustrate the influence of mesh refinement, boundary conditions, and slenderness ratios for isotropic linear elastic response. Specific higher-order effects

Framework for technical evaluation of decision support systems based on water smart metering: the iWIDGET case
Water smart metering enables the measurement and reporting of water consumption at sub-daily intervals. However, assuming that increased availability of consumption information will necessarily result in changed behaviour is simplistic. The main scientific challenges for iWIDGET project are the management and extraction of useful information from vast amounts of high-resolution consumption data, the development of customized information to influence awareness and support behavioral change, and the integration of iWIDGET concepts into a set of decision-support tools for water utilities and consumers. In this paper, it is described the evaluation general framework, the iWIDGET system

In situ preservation and restoration of architectural tiles, materials and procedures: results of an international survey
In order to aid research, improve preservation actions and develop better options for future interventions it is important to know the preservation materials and procedures adopted throughout the past and especially the ones being adopted nowadays. A survey to specialists working in situ in preservation and restoration of glazed decorative tiles has been performed aiming at getting insight on their type of training, work portfolio, opinions, the current materials and procedures used in the diverse phases of a preservation intervention (diagnosis, cleaning, consolidation, bonding fragments and fixing of glazed layer, volumetric and chromatic reintegration, final coating, resetting of tiles and manufacture of replicas) and the criteria/factors that support the specialists choices.

In-situ assessment of timber structural members: Combining information from visual strength grading and NDT/SDT methods
The non-destructive assessment of mechanical properties of timber members in situ is currently done byapplying visual strength grading standards (VSG) which were developed specifically for sawn timber. Thewell-known limitations of the full application of VSG in situ lead to the necessity to adapt those standards. This was done by selecting the most important strength-reduction features and considering insight information such as the position of defects with regard to stress distribution in the element. Concurrently, to tackle the subjectivity and limitations of VSG, other non- and also semi-destructive testing(NDT/SDT) methods were developed to support/validate the VSG results. This paper presents a review of the application of VSG in situ and the way the information has been combined with information provided by other NDT/SDT methods to obtain a more reliable assessment of the mechanical performance of timber structural members.
