Processes controlling the seasonal cycle of wave-dominated inlets
This paper reviews the physical processes controlling wave-dominated inlets, based on several studies conducted at two inletslocated on the West Coast of Portugal. Once the observed hydrodynamics and morphological changes are reasonably simulated, numerical experiments are performed to explain the development of the inlet during fair weather conditions and itsshoaling and closure during winter storms. The former behaviour is explained by a tidal distortion that promotes ebbdominancewhile the latter is explained by the combination of several wave-related processes: (1) the

Rock joint topography: three-dimensional scanning and numerical analysis
Joints are the most defining features of fractured rock masses. It has been well established thatjoint behaviour is mainly defined by wall topography, which is difficult to measure and define. Previousworks have employed both contact and non-contact scanning methods and multiple approaches tothe analysis of rock surfaces, but a majority focused exclusively on individual surface characterisationwithout appraising wall

SAFESIDE: A computer-aided procedure for integrating benefits and costs in roadside safety intervention decision making
Collisions with dangerous roadside obstacles and rollovers are responsible for many injuries and deaths in highways worldwide. International crash data indicate that roadside characteristics contribute to more than half of all run-off-road injury crashes (RORIC) involving serious injury or death. Furthermore, roadside geometric characteristics are believed to be the leading cause of rollover in single-vehicle RORIC. Differences in each country

Setting a city strategy for low carbon emissions: the role of electric vehicles, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
One of the European policy objectives, as envisaged by the EC Transport White Paper, is to reduce Europe's dependence on imported oil and to cut greenhouse gas emission (GHG) from transport by 20% by 2030 and by 70% until 2050 (with respect to 2008 levels). For achieving this goal, the role of integrated energy and urban mobility systems are explored as part of a city

Sewer asset management planning
Wastewater services are fundamental for the protection of public health and environment, population well-being and sustainable development of communities. The value of urban water assets represents a major part of all public infrastructures. These assets must be managed rationally and efficiently, justifying investment priorities in a clear and straightforward way. Effective decision-making requires a comprehensive approach allowing the incorporation of desired performance at acceptable risk levels, considering investment and operational costs. Advanced sewer infrastructure asset management (IAM) is key to achieve and ensure adequate future levels of service, in issues such as flooding of urban areas, pollution prevention, balancing performance, risk and cost. The paper illustrates the integration of different support tools and methods by implementation of the AWARE-P procedure for planning IAM, demonstrated by the experience of fourteen wastewater utilities. Results showed the effectiveness of the tools and methods at different stages of the AWARE-P methodology.

Sinking of concrete modules into a sandy seabed: a case study
Three submerged coastal structures on the sandy seabed at SantaMaria delMar (SMM) Beach in Southwest Spain were monitored during the sixmonths after installation, starting inNovember of 2005. The monitoring evaluated the self-burial phenomenon of the 40 precast modular concrete elements of the three structures. Assessment included scouring around the structures, their vertical movement, the sinking velocity of the modules and the resulting beach profiles. Pressure sensors and precision topographies permitted continuous monitoring of the self-burial process for the first time in a full-scale case. Comparison of two bathymetries (one performed immediately prior to installation and another performed six months after installation) indicated slight accretion of the seabed, whereas intermediate topographic surveys indicated extensive scouring around the structures. The three structures began sinking into the sandy bottomplatform immediately after placement and continued until they reached the rocky bottom. This study implemented a new methodology using pressure sensors attached to the concrete modules to monitor the structural sinking. Unexpectedly, the average sinking speed was extremely rapid at approximately 3

Stability formula and failure probability analysis of wave-dissipating blocks considering wave breaking
The effects ofwave steepness andwave breaking on the stability of wave-dissipating blocks placed on caisson breakwaters are examined by hydraulic experiments under conditions with and without wave breaking. It is confirmed that there is a clear dependence of the block stability on the wave steepness through the wave-breaking type, such as plunging and spilling breakers. The stability parameter in thespilling breaker case is larger than that in the plunging breaker case. For non-breaking wave conditions, there is no effect of the wave steepness. An empirical stability formula is proposed taking into account the effects of the wave steepness and the wave-breaking type. Finally, by using the stability formula, failure probabilities of the wave-dissipating blocks having a nominal diameter are evaluated by the first-orderreliability method of the Level II reliability analysis.
