Characterization of Portuguese Historical Gypsum Mortars: a Comparison between Two Case Studies
Abstract. The use of gypsum plaster for interior covering of walls and ceilings in the Portuguese architecture was particularly expressive in the period between the XVIII and the XX century. However, information about this important heritage is almost inexistent, which is leading to a fast loss of important patrimony. In this paper, the results of the characterization of gypsum plaster samples belonging to two buildings from the same historical period (end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX), situated in distant geographical regions of Portugal are presented and discussed. XRD, TGA-DTA, optical microscopy and SEM-EDS observations were used for the chemical and microstructural characterization. Some physical and mechanical properties, such as capillary absorption, dynamic elasticity modulus and compressive strength were also determined and a relationship between the characteristics observed in the samples and the technology associated to their use and application on site, as well as the possible existence of regional influences on all these aspects, are discussed.

CHARACTERIZATION OF THE FOULED BALLAST LAYER IN THE SUBSTRUCTURE OF A 19TH CENTURY RAILWAY TRACK UNDER RENEWAL
The purpose of these field and lab studies undertaken during rehabilitation work being done on an ancient railway line was to characterize a layer of ballast fouled with soil found in the track substructure. The field studies included the characterization of the thickness, grain size distribution and void ratio of the fouled ballast layer, as well as a large number of plate load tests, both on the fouled ballast layer and on the subgrade. The resilient behaviour of the fouled ballast was evaluated in the lab by cyclic triaxial tests on large size reconstituted specimens with distinct fouling indexes (different grain size distribution) and distinct humidity states (dry or wet). The results obtained were used as support for the decision to maintain the fouled ballast layer under the new sub-ballast in a number of stretches of the renewed line.

Designing Digital Preservation Solutions:A Risk Management-Based Approach
Digital preservation aims to keep digital objects accessible over long periods of time, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of these digital objects. In such complex environments, Risk Management is a key factor in assuring the normal behaviour of systems over time. Currently, the digital preservation arena commonly uses Risk Management concepts to assess repositories. In this paper, we intend to go further and propose a perspective where Risk Management can be used not only to assess existing solutions, but also to conceive digital preservation environments. Thus, we propose a Risk Management-based approach to design and assess digital preservation environments, including:·the definition of context and identification of strategic objectives to determine specific requirements and characterize which consequences are acceptable within the identified context;·the identification, analysis and evaluation of threats and vulnerabilities that may affect the normal behaviour of a specific business or the achievement of the goals and conformance to the requirements identified in the context characterization; and,·definition of actions to deal with the risks associated with the identified threats and vulnerabilities. We generalize and survey the main requirements, threats, vulnerabilities and techniques that can be applied in the scope of digital preservation.

Development of a methodology to evaluate the flood risk at the coastal zone
This paper illustrates the methodology developed to evaluatethe risk of flooding of a coastal area, as well as theapplication of such methodology to Vale do Lobo beach, situated in the Loulé Municipality, a Portuguese coastal areaunder significant touristic pressure. The methodology isbased on four main steps: a) division of the study area intosub-areas with similar characteristics in terms of coastaldefense; b) determining the probability of exceedance ofpre-set thresholds of flood levels for each study area; c)establishment of qualitative factors related to theconsequences of exceedance of pre-set thresholds of floodlevels; d) combination of the above steps for expeditiousassessment of flood risks. The determination of flood levels follows the methodologypresented in [1] and [2], which is based on the transferenceof the Faro wave-buoy regime to the study area by using theSWAN model integrated in a geographic information system(GIS)
