A comprehensive and well tested energy balance for water supply systems
This paper presents a novel energy balance scheme and performance indicators for assessing energy efficiency in water supply systems. This assessment consists of a three-step procedure: system characterisation and data collection, energy balance calculation and energy performance indicators assessment. The main innovation is the integrated approach between energy and water balances allowing the quantification of energy inefficiencies directly associated with water losses. Comprehensive energy performance indicators can be calculated by utilities with different maturity levels allowing a fair comparison of energy efficiency between systems with different layouts and operational schemes. This energy balance scheme has been applied by 17 water utilities in Portugal. Results have shown that systems provide more than twice the minimum energy necessary to supply their consumers and, consequently, there is a significant energy saving potential: 40% through water loss reduction, 30% for changes in network operation and layout and 30% for pump inefficiency reduction.

A numerical study of the February 15, 1941 storm in the Tagus estuary
On February 15, 1941, a storm caused one of the major natural disasters in the IberianPeninsula in the past century. The storm made landfall in the north of Portugal, leading to alarge surge in the Tagus estuary. Adverse meteorological conditions combined with a highspring tide led to extensive flooding of dry land, causing severe damage and casualties. A suiteof regional and local scale models is developed to analyze the event and the relativecontributions of the different forcing agents to the extreme water levels. Quantitative andqualitative validations show that the models adequately reproduce this type of events. Themodels are then used to assess the inundation in the upstream reaches of the estuary whereextensive agricultural lands are protected by dikes. Results show that over 25 km2 could beinundated today, a value that would increase threefold for a sea level rise of 0.5 m. Then, therelative importance of the different forcing mechanisms on the extreme water levels isinvestigated through numerical experiments. It is shown that the regional surge and the setupinduced by swell are the two main drivers of the inundation. In particular, the modulation of thewave setup by tides induces a semi-diurnal signal which is amplified by resonance inside theestuary.

A study on the dynamic train-track interaction over cut-fill transitions on buried culverts
Sudden changes in the structural and geotechnical properties of railway tracks along its course are normally associated with subgrade stiffness transitions, differential settlements and, ultimately, hanging sleepers that reduce the performance of the railway system. This paper aims at analysing and quantifying the impact of such situations, particularly cut-fill transitions combined with the presence of culverts, on the train-track system response. A cut-fill transition on a buried culvert is used as case study for which track geometry and stiffness evaluation data were available. A numerical model, considering the coupled train-track interaction, was developed using a 3D FEM dynamic analysis tool that was further improved here with a mixed implicit-explicit time integration scheme. The results suggest that the faster degradation rates typically found at similar locations are mostly related to the development of early permanent deformations in the subgrade layers, rather than to sudden stiffness transitions, which then aggravate the problem by causing important dynamic amplifications in the train-track interaction. Therefore, numerical approaches similar to the one presented herein can be valuable tools for designers and railway infrastructure managers in order to anticipate and mitigate such negative effects at these locations.

A survey on data quality for dependable monitoring in wireless sensor networks
Wireless sensor networks are being increasingly used in several application areas, particularly to collect data and monitor physical processes. Non-functional requirements, likereliability, security or availability, are often important and must be accounted for in the applicationdevelopment. For that purpose, there is a large body of knowledge on dependability techniques fordistributed systems, which provide a good basis to understand how to satisfy these non-functionalrequirements of WSN-based monitoring applications. Given the data-centric nature of monitoringapplications, it is of particular importance to ensure that data are reliable or, more generically, that they have the necessary quality. In this survey, we look into the problem of ensuring thedesired quality of data for dependable monitoring using WSNs. We take a dependability-orientedperspective, reviewing the possible impairments to dependability and the prominent existingsolutions to solve or mitigate these impairments. Despite the variety of components that may form aWSN-based monitoring system, we give particular attention to understanding which faults can affectsensors, how they can affect the quality of the information and how this quality can be improvedand quantified.

An index-based method for coastal-flood risk assessment in low-lying areas (Costa de Caparica, Portugal)
The coastal area of Costa de Caparica is an important territory representing one of the main affected areas by storms such as Hercules in 2013 and 2014. This paper propose a new coastal risk assessment to coastal floods, combining GIS-based inundation analysis over the last 35 years, coastal vulnerability model based on geological and physical variables and, valuation of surface' elements exposed to storms considering territorial and human components. Along with the methodology proposed for local scale, this paper points out strengths and weakness, comparing the results with another simple method to achieve coastal risk by floods. Based on this study, the paper identifies potential directions for future research contributing in management, rescue and safety decisions with local authorities.

An oil risk management system based on high-resolution hazard and vulnerability calculations
A new oil risk management system is proposed herein. Risk is computed in a quantitative way, combining a detailed hazard maps generated with a process-based oil spill model over an unstructured computational grid, and a spatially detailed methodology for vulnerability analysis. The system has a web interface that serves as a single point of access to both emergency-driven and risk-management products. The system

Anomalies detection in adhesive wall tiling systems by infrared thermography
Adherent tiling systems are widely used all over the world as wall cladding because of their aesthetic andtechnical characteristics. However, anomalous behaviours often occur; compromising the overall behaviourof facades, and possibly raising safety risks. The need to create expeditious, non-destructive andaccurate methods of inspection that can encourage these systems

Application protocol for the consolidation of calcareous substrates by the use of nanolimes: from laboratory research to practice
Calcareous materials such as limestone and lime-based mortars, widely used in the Built Heritage, are often subjected to degradation processes that can lead to loss of cohesion and material loss. Consolidation of these materials with liquid products via the surface is a common practice; however, the most used consolidation products (e. g. TEOS-based) show a poor physical-chemical compatibility with calcareous substrates. For application on calcareous materials, the so-called nanolimes, i. e. dispersions of lime nanoparticles in alcohols, are an alternative to TEOS-based products, thanks to their chemical compatibility with lime-based substrates. Nanolimes can help to recover a superficial loss of cohesion. However, their in-depth consolidation effect is not always satisfactory. Previous work has shown that a better deposition of lime nanoparticles in depth can be achieved by adapting the properties of the nanolime dispersion (kinetic stability and evaporation rate) to the moisture transport properties of the substrate, through optimization of the solvent. In this paper, freshly synthetized nanolimes were dispersed in pure ethanol and/or in binary mixture of ethanol (95 %) and water (5 %). These nanolimes were applied on Maastricht limestone and on a lime-based mortar by capillary absorption (method commonly used for laboratory tests) and by nebulization (method widely used in situ). The aim of this research is to fill the gap between laboratory tests and on site application, providing an application protocol for restorers and professionals in the field. The research shows that results obtained by application by capillary absorption do not always correspond to those obtained by nebulization. This fact should be considered when deciding on the use of a consolidation surface treatment in practice.
