Importance of infragravity waves in a wave-dominated inlet under storm conditions
The processes associated with infragravity waves (IGW) and their role on the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of a wave-dominated inlet are investigated using field observations collected at the Albufeira Lagoon (Portugal) during storm Leslie in October 2018. During the storm, significant IGW heights reached up to 1.0 m in the surf zone and 0.4 m inside the lagoon. IGW frequencies were blocked by ebb currents at the flood-delta and this effect was stronger for higher IGW frequencies. Therefore, low-frequency IGW were able to propagate further into the inner lagoon. The application of a 1D energy balance equation suggests that depth-induced breaking and bottom friction contributed equally to dissipate IGW energy at the flood-delta and that this dissipation was stronger during the flood than during the ebb.Large horizontal velocities under IGW crests increased the instantaneous suspended sediment transport rate by up to two orders of magnitude during flood at the flood-delta. The net suspended sediment transport rate and its variability, associated with the wave motion, was positive (landward) during flood and negligible during ebb. These positive values were associated with large wave-induced orbital velocities, suggesting that waves were more effective than tidal currents in inducing suspended sediment transport. The oscillatory suspended sediment transport rate was directed towards the lagoon and dominated by IGW frequencies. The observed sediment accretion of the northern channel occurred during the most energetic IGW. The measurements presented in this study and their analyses demonstrate how IGW play a major role in the sedimentary dynamics of wave-dominated inlets during storm conditions.

In-service performance of fiber-reinforced polymer construction used in water and sewage treatment plants
Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being increasingly used in the construction sector, especially in corrosion-prone applications. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about their long-term behaviour under real service conditions. This paper presents a study about the in-service performance of FRP constructions, which involved the field inspection of 410 FRP constructions included in 31 water and sewage treatment plants in various locations in Portugal. The analysis of the data gathered in these inspections allowed (i) validating a classification system previously proposed by the authors for anomalies, causes, inspection methods and rehabilitation techniques for FRP constructions; determining (ii) the most common anomalies that occur during their service stage and (iii) their most probable causes; and (iv) predicting the most suitable diagnosis and rehabilitation techniques for each anomaly. Moreover, this study provided a better understanding of the long-term in-service behaviour of FRP constructions when exposed to different environmental conditions. The analysis of the data obtained in the field study allowed identifying the main parameters governing the in-service performance and durability of this type of constructions. The results obtained show that non mechanical anomalies are the most common. As expected, the durability performance is very different in indoor and outdoor constructions, the latter presenting much more frequent and severe anomalies. UV radiation and chemicals are found to be the most aggressive exposure environments. The results obtained also show that visual inspection is the most effective diagnosis method for this type of constructions and that surface cleaning and protection is the most commonly recommended rehabilitation technique.

Influence of laboratory aggregate compaction method on the particle packing of stone mastic asphalt
The type of aggregates and their packing characteristics under compaction are key factors for the design of asphalt mixtures with improved performance, namely, with respect to resistance to permanent deformation. A good example is Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), known by its stone

Influence of the aggregate skeleton matrix and volumetric composition on the resistance of stone mastic asphalt to permanent deformation
The influence of different aggregate skeleton matrices, as well volumetric composition and mixture stiffness, on the resistance of SMA to permanent deformation was assessed. Nine SMA withdifferent optimised aggregate skeleton matrices, studied elsewhere, were now evaluated to permanent deformation with wheel tracking. The results were statistically analysed concerning relationship withspecimens

Inspection, diagnosis and rehabilitation systems for all-fibre-reinforced polymer constructions
In the past few decades, the construction industry has been increasingly using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, due to their advantages in comparison with traditional materials, especially in aggressive environments. However, the information regarding the long-term behaviour of FRP constructions under real service conditions is limited and scattered. In this paper, a system for the inspection, diagnosis and rehabilitation of FRP constructions is presented and validated, providing a standardized and systematic tool for the maintenance of these constructions during their service life. A classification system for the anomalies and most probable causes is first presented. To assist the diagnosis of the anomalies, several in situ non-destructive methods are included in the system, as well as various rehabilitation techniques, able to maintain and/or restore the functionality of FRP elements. Several correlation matrices are proposed, interrelating different anomalies, and relating them with probable causes, and diagnosis and rehabilitation techniques. The system is validated and calibrated through an extensive field campaign of inspections of 410 substructures in 31 facilities. Although developed for FRP profiles and moulded gratings of all-FRP constructions, the system can also be used to inspect FRP components of sandwich or hybrid structures. The implementation of this system supports the inspection activities of a proactive maintenance strategy and, at the same time, the standardization of inspections, resulting in an increase of the effectiveness and objectivity of the actions to be taken upon the occurrence of anomalies in FRP constructions.

Investigation of the Structural Dynamic Behavior of the Frontinus Gate
The Western Anatolia Region of Turkey is an important region of high seismic activity. The active dynamics of the region are shaped by a compression and expansion mechanism. This activemechanism is still ongoing and causes strong seismic activity in the region. The Frontinus Gate is amonument in the Roman city of Hierapolis of Phrygia located in southwestern Anatolia. The aim ofthis study is to investigate the seismic behavior of this stone masonry structure using discrete elementmodeling. For this purpose, nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed to simulate the structuralresponse of the gate under seismic excitation. Deformation, damage, and failure patterns induced inthe masonry gate for di erent levels of seismic action are evaluated and discussed. An earthquakewith a return period of 475 years is expected to cause some damage, but no collapse, while for areturn period of 2475 years, the models indicate collapse of the monument.
