Nonlinear dynamic response of stone masonry minarets under harmonic excitation
In this paper three historical masonry minarets in Istanbul, Turkey, are assessed for thedependency between the input harmonic motion and structural response parameters. Theirheights are 40, 73 and 74 m, while the slenderness is 12, 6 and 12, respectively. The discreteelement method is used in dynamic nonlinear analyses. Models were calibrated withmeasured natural frequencies. A series of sine-wave excitations is created for different frequency-amplitude pairs varying between 0.4 and 10 Hz, and between 0.1 and 1 m/s. Fromthe results of dynamic simulations, a general trend was observed for masonry minarets.Especially, slenderness and wall thickness play an important role on their dynamic responseand damage pattern. Dynamic behavior of these minarets cannot reliably be estimated bystatic non-linear analysis. Two engineering demand parameters (EDPs) are defined to characterizethe displacement of the minaret top and the inter-ring shear displacements alongthe minaret body. Damage performance criteria for minarets are proposed based on fourdamage states and tentative limit values are given. We were able to identify the occurrenceof those limit states as a function of frequency and amplitude of sinusoidal input motion.

Numerical analysis of an onshore oscillating water column wave energy converter for different wall slopes
An alternative to the energy matrix expansion, due to the increase of global electricity demand, is the renewable sea wave energy source, which has high energy potential. The Oscillating Water Column (OWC) converter is one of the most studied, although it is not yet used at commercial scale. Therefore, searching the optimal geometric configuration is fundamental to turn this device viable. This study proposes a numerical analysis of an onshore OWC for different slopes of chamber walls (from 40o to 90o) and equipped with a Wells turbine. Simulations of incompressible 2D flows are performed by means of the FLUENT® software, which is based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The k-

Numerical analysis of the influence of air compressibility effects on an oscillating water column wave energy converter chamber
The most studied device used for extracting wave energy is the Oscillating Water Column (OWC). In general, numerical simulations of these cases by means of models based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations adopt the Volume of Fluid method to deal with the free surface flow which is considered incompressible in both water and air. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the compressibility effect on the air inside the OWC chamber by the FLUENT® numerical model. A methodology is implemented, taking into account both water and air flows incompressible, but, at every instant, a pressure condition is imposed on the top boundary of the chamber to consider the compressibility effect. This pressure condition is based on an analytical equation that considers the isentropic transformation of the air and effects of Wells and impulse turbines. Results of compressible and incompressible numerical models are compared. The amplification factor, the root mean square of air pressure inside the chamber and OWC efficiency in relation to incident wave period, wave height and turbine characteristic relation are analyzed. Results show that air compressibility effects can diminish the predicted OWC efficiency up to about 20% in both Wells and impulse turbines.

Numerical analysis of the performance of two onshore oscillating water column wave energy converters at different chamber wall slopes
In this study, a numerical analysis of the performance of two Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converters, at different front and back wall slopes, was carried out. The first device had vertical front and back walls and the second one had its wall slopes of 40° in relation to the horizontal plane. The FLUENT® numerical model, which is based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, was used. The Volume of Fluid (VoF) method was employed to take into account free surface flows. The case study comprised a 10 m deep flume with an onshore OWC at its end, equipped with a Wells turbine. A 2D hydrodynamic mathematical model was employed and a 3D air pressure effect inside the OWC air-chamber was considered. Analyses of the hydrodynamics behavior, fluid-structure interaction outside (run-up/down, reflected waves) and inside the chamber (free surface elevation, sloshing) and energy distribution (pneumatic extracted energy, reflected wave energy and energy losses) were conducted. Results showed that the device with inclined walls had the best efficiency in comparison with the other one. However, the latter showed lower variation in efficiency in the wave period range than the former.

Numerical analysis of the response of an onshore oscillating water column wave energy converter to random waves
The main objective of this study is to investigate differences of random incident waves from regular ones in performance of wave energy converters (WEC). A numerical analysis of an onshore oscillating water column (OWC) WEC is carried out by means of the FLUENT® software, which is based on Reynolds - Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Numerical modeling of the tension stiffening in reinforced concrete members via discontinuum models
This study presents a numerical investigation on the fracture mechanism of tension stiffening phenomenon in reinforced concrete members. A novel approach using the discrete element method (DEM) is proposed, where three-dimensional randomly generated distinct polyhedral blocks are used, representing concrete and one-dimensional truss elements are utilized, representing steel reinforcements. Thus, an explicit representation of reinforced concrete members is achieved, and the mechanical behavior of the system is solved by integrating the equations of motion for each block using the central difference algorithm. The inter-block interactions are taken into consideration at each contact point with springs and cohesive frictionalelements. Once the applied modeling strategy is validated, based on previously published experimental findings, a sensitivity analysis is performed for bond stiffness, cohesion strength, and the number of truss elements. Hence, valuable inferences are made regarding discontinuum analysis of reinforced concrete members, including concrete

OpencoastS: an open-access service for the automatic generation of coastal forecast systems
Coastal forecast systems are used for many purposes, including harbor management, search and rescue operations, and response to extreme events. However, the generation and operation of these systems is timeconsuming, requires expertise in both information technologies and modeling of coastal processes, and needsdedicated computational power. The new service OPENCoastS overcomes these difficulties by generating ondemandcoastal circulation forecast systems through a web platform with minimal user intervention. Using aweb platform, the user is guided through seven simple steps to generate an operational forecast system for anycoastal region. The only requirements are an unstructured grid of the study area and information on river flow, ifapplicable. The platform provides ocean and atmospheric forcings and data for model validation, and includesinterfaces for results visualization and forecasts management. Forecasts are generated with the community modelSCHISM, and computing resources are provided through the European Open Science Cloud.
